About 9.5 miles one way · packed stone · shared use · dawn to dusk

Tweetsie Trail guide

The former ET&WNC rail grade runs about 9.5 miles from Johnson City toward Elizabethton on packed stone, crossing seven bridges and multiple roads past railroad, geology, and local-history markers.

Choose the turnaround

A gradual grade can still become a long return

Distance, summer heat, road crossings, and the packed-rock surface matter more than elevation. The official mileage is one way, so every out-and-back doubles the number on the marker.

Easy grade · variable distance

Trailhead out-and-back

Distance
2–6 miles round trip
Time
45 minutes–2 hours
Effort
Packed stone, gradual grade, road crossings, and a return over the same miles.

Use a bridge, Jacob's Nature Park detour, or Quarry Overlook as the agreed turnaround; verify the chosen point on the city's interactive map.

Moderate by length

Johnson City to Elizabethton

Distance
About 9.5 miles one way
Time
About 1–2 hours riding, longer on foot
Effort
Gradual rail grade with seven bridges, repeated crossings, sun exposure, and no automatic return transportation.

Official first-party pages round the trail to 9.5, 9.6, or 10 miles. Treat it as about 9.5 miles one way, arrange a pickup or ride back, and do not present the roughly 19-mile out-and-back as a casual family spin.

Easy to moderate

Family bridge-and-history ride

Distance
Set by the youngest rider
Time
60–90 minutes
Effort
Fine packed rock, shared use, passing cyclists, and traffic awareness at each road crossing.

Begin at 116 Van Brocklin Way, practice braking and passing signals near the trailhead, then turn around while everyone still has energy for the return.

Shared trail, active crossings

Fine gravel does not mean separated from traffic

Walkers, runners, children, dogs, and faster cyclists share the corridor. Signal before passing, keep pets leashed, slow before every road crossing, and use the city's mile markers or bench numbers when reporting an emergency location.

Four useful access points

Start where the return makes sense

Johnson City trailhead

The official start is 116 Van Brocklin Way near Alabama and Legion streets. The paved lot has benches, water fountains, a bike repair station, and a portable restroom. Nearby overflow lots connect by trail extensions.

Happy Valley access

Access near Happy Valley Road sits around mile 3.1, across from Happy Valley Elementary School. Parking is limited, so it is better for a confirmed shorter section than an improvised large-group start.

Elizabethton access

An access point near the ballfields at 1808 W. Elk Avenue is around mile 4.2. The trail continues through Elizabethton toward Stateline Road and Blue Ridge Drive.

South-end facilities

A small parking area and portable restroom sit near mile 9.4, shortly before the south end. Do not assume a waiting shuttle, bike service, or guaranteed pickup signal at the end.

Railroad and creekside stops

The history markers give shorter rides a destination

Sinking Creek and Jacob's Nature Park

Within roughly half a mile of the Johnson City trailhead, signs lead to the 28-acre nature park and its wetland, arboretum, and short hiking paths. The detour changes the surface and adds time.

Milligan Depot

A replica depot near mile 2.5 recalls the stations that served the ET&WNC line. It is a concrete family turnaround when the objective is history rather than distance.

Quarry Overlook

The overlook near mile 3 has a portable restroom and gives a longer out-and-back a clear destination. Heat and the return distance still matter on the gradual grade.

Sycamore Shoals area

The historic park is accessible from the trail around mile 5.8 and has its own paths and exhibits. Adding it turns a simple rail-trail ride into a longer history day.
